The Jean Pigozzi African Art Collection

Perspectives 145: Bodys Isek Kingelez, Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, Texas, USA

from 29/01/2005 to 01/05/2005

As part of a 2005 Houston-wide project focusing on contemporary art from Africa, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston presents the work of the seminal African sculptor Bodys Isek Kingelez in his first solo museum exhibition in the U.S. Partly in reaction to the urban chaos of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) where the artist lives and works, Kingelez creates architectural models—at times grouping them into virtual cities—from recycled materials such as paper, cardboard, and plastic. Kingelez conceives these structures as prototypes for community dwellings that exemplify civic values such as peace, justice, and freedom. Includes a statement by Kingelez and documentation on the artist’s career.
