[EN] What Does the Image Stand For?

With the rapid development of new technologies, images – both still and moving – have become omnipresent in daily life. Lens-based images have invaded the web and social networks, those new forms of media that have made photography ubiquitous and granted it a prominent position in innumerable practices. The photographic image, initially intended to reproduce every last detail of reality, is manipulated at will. To that extent does the image, this documentation of daily life, convey reality? Is a photograph an objective framing of the world at a particular moment? Is it a symbol or a symptom of contemporary culture?

[FR] MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image (anciennement Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal) présente, en collaboration avec VOX, centre de l’image contemporaine la Galerie de l’UQAM, l’exposition centrale de son édition 2017 portant sur le thème De quoi l’image est-elle le nom ? développé par le commissaire invité Ami Barak.

Aujourd’hui, les images captent le monde à tous moments. Mais que disent-elles désormais ? Sont-elles la capture objective du monde à un instant T ? Que sont devenus ces marqueurs de réalité ?



J.D. ’Okhai Ojeikere (Nigeria) préserve une partie de la mémoire ethnographique et culturelle de son pays en générant un inventaire de près de mille coiffures réalisées par les femmes nigérianes.
