Abu Bakarr Mansaray
Né en 1970 à Tongo, Sierra Leone.
Vit et travaille à Freetown, réfugié en 1998 à Harlingen, Pays-Bas.
Abu Bakarr Mansaray, de son vrai nom Abu Bockari Mansaray, interrompt ses études en 1987, et vient s’installer à Freetown chez son oncle.
C’est dans un de ses pays les plus pauvres d’Afrique de l’Ouest, qu’Abu Bakarr décide de devenir artiste avec une volonté inouïe d'apprendre et d'inverser la marche d’un pays qui sombre dans la guerre civile. “Sometimes I tried to make or design things if I cannot afford to buy them from the shop. Mostly I succeeded in making them, sometimes not”.
Il étudie seul dans les manuels de chimie, de physique, d'électronique, de mathématique et s'autoproclame “Professor”, travaillant inlassablement à l'élaboration de systèmes, de machineries automatiques, mécaniques, électriques. Il fabrique des machines à produire du feu, de la lumière, de l'air, de l'eau, du froid, du mouvement, du son. “I am an artist doing a lot of creations without limitation. I do drawings, paintings, sculptures (with my own self designed engines). I also invent machines for my own use at home and sometimes for people”.
Il a réinvestit une technique très courante en Afrique Centrale, qui consiste à fabriquer en fils de fer des objets décoratifs ou des jouets. Il applique cette technique qu’il pousse au maximum de ces possibilités pour la réalisation de machines futuristes au fonctionnement extravagant. Il réalise parallèlement des dessins faits de calculs, d’études, de schémas et de commentaires au crayon de papier, stylo bille et crayons de couleurs conçus comme des œuvres à part entière. “I like doing strange drawings with a lot of complications and also designing complicated machines with scientific ideas that are sometimes beyond human imaginations (example is the machine I designed called the “Hell Extinguisher” and “Nuclear telephone discovered in Hell”)”.
Sans doute la situation économique, politique et sociale de Freetown et de la Sierra Léone, totalement détruite, où la guerre n’a laissée derrière elle que des ruines et carcasses calcinées ont largement pris part au fantasme, à l’imaginaire et à l’inspiration du jeune Abu Bakkar qui a réussi à fuir son pays dans des conditions indescriptibles. Il est réfugié désormais en Hollande ou il peut enfin se consacrer à de très grands dessins et projets. “I like doing complicated drawings because I like special arts with techniques and I want people to feel the power of creations”.
