George Lilanga

Né en 1934 à Masasi, Tanzanie.
Décédé en 2005 à Dar es Salaam, Tanzanie.
Vivait et travaillait à Dar es Salaam.
George Lilanga fait sa scolarité à l'école élémentaire de Lindi City. C'est dans ce contexte rural, en 1961, qu'il commence la sculpture au côté des célèbres sculpteurs Makonde. Issus des hauts plateaux du Mozambique, ils émigrèrent dans la région de Dar es Salaam, où ils trouvèrent des conditions climatiques, économiques et politiques plus favorables. George fonde avec d'autres artistes en 1973, " Nyumba ya Sanaa " (the House of Arts) et apprend, au contact de l'artiste Tingatinga, diverses techniques artistiques (dessin, lithogravure et peinture).

Lilanga développe simultanément un travail de sculpture et de peinture. Ses oeuvres dérivent de la culture Makonde. Elles reprennent entre autres la valeur mythique de la femme - développée dans les histoires et légendes- ou les danses exécutées par les hommes portant des masques. Les Makondes sont soumis à une pensée magique ; les ancêtres, les génies, les forces naturelles qui occupent une place importante, les maintiennent dans un univers tourmenté. Toute l'oeuvre sculpturale et picturale de Lilanga, si elle reste inspirée de cette culture, témoigne cependant d'une profonde révolution qui inaugure la naissance de l'individualisation et du talent personnel en Afrique. Ses oeuvres polychromes, révèlent un sens esthétique très développé et traduisent un sens aigu de la critique sociale et de la caricature. Elles apparaissent comme des mises en scène d'histoires ancestrales, mythologiques ou contemporaines, jouées par la population villageoise.
