A younger generation of Malian photographers has picked up where Sidibé, who died last year, and Keïta, who died in 2001, left off. Oumou Diarra in her series Les Chasseuses de Bazin, examines the aspirational desires and consumerism of young women who go to great lengths to dress in expensive traditional fabrics worn by famous musicians, much the way American or European youths might take their fashion cues from music videos, even if they cant afford the lavish clothes and jewelry they see on screen. Fatoumata Diabaté created a mobile studio with a nostalgic time-capsule theme that became an open-air installation and traveling performance piece.
