Né en 1921 à Bamako, Mali.
Vivait et travaillait à Bamako, décédé en 2001.

C'est un autodidacte de la technique photographique. En 1935 son oncle, de retour d'un séjour au Sénégal, lui offre son premier appareil photo, un Kodak Brownie Flash. Artisan photographe, il se spécialise dans l'art du portrait qu'il réalise sur commande, en lumière naturelle et en noir et blanc, avec une chambre 13 x 18. Ce format lui permet de fournir des tirages par contact de grande qualité optique sans avoir recours à l'agrandisseur.

Il ouvre son atelier en 1948 à Bamako. Très vite les photographies de Seydou Keïta connaissent un grand succès. Son exigence professionnelle et esthétique l'impose comme le portraitiste très apprécié des habitants de Bamako, du Mali et de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. De 1949 à 1962, Seydou Keïta photographiera le tout Bamako. On pose seul, en couple, en famille, en groupe, entre amis, cadrés en buste trois quart, ou en pieds, presque toujours positionné par Keita, lui-même qui voulait donner de ses clients la plus belle image. Dans son studio, les clients pouvaient se faire photographier avec des vêtements chics, chapeaux et accessoires (bijoux, stylos, montres, fleurs...), mais aussi poste de radio, vélo, scooter, voiture que Keita mettait à leur disposition. Chacun exhibait son portrait avec fierté. Le photographe utilise des fonds à motifs décoratifs qu'il renouvelle tous les deux ou trois ans. C'est grâce à ces fonds qu'il a pu par la suite dater ses clichés.

Les photographies de Seydou Keïta constituent un témoignage exceptionnel de la société malienne de la fin des années 1940 à 1977. Il a intuitivement inventé ou réinventé l'art du portrait à travers la recherche d'une précision extrême. Une grâce, une élégance transparaît de toutes ses images. Sa maîtrise de la lumière, du sujet, du cadrage ramène à l'essentiel. Tout ce qui figure dans l'image participe à la beauté naturelle de cette image. Inventif et très moderne Seydou Keita s'inscrit dans la lignée des grands portraitistes comme Avedon. A l'époque du multiculturalisme, cette oeuvre d'une rare beauté prend tout naturellement place dans l'histoire mondiale de la photographie.
